The transition to a low-carbon economy will be measured in decades, not years. Alternative sources of energy must be developed, new infrastructure must be constructed and advanced technologies must be deployed. While an alternative system emerges, evolves and matures, it is imperative what we ensure the availability of affordable energy supplies. Measures that enhance domestic supplies of oil and natural gas, in particular, will be necessary to maximize the likelihood that the prevailing energy system will remain as secure, stable and affordable as possible.
