Since Climate RESOLVE was launched in early 2003, 107 of Business Roundtable's 150 member companies have signed on to participate in the initiative. These companies represent all major sectors of the U.S. economy.

In March 2004, 82 percent of Climate RESOLVE participants took part in a survey to evaluate their progress in increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Highlights from the survey included:

  • 100 percent of the survey respondents reported that they engaged in GHG management program activities in 2003 or are undertaking these activities in 2004.

  • 92 percent of respondents reported that they already have implemented or are in the process of implementing measures to manage GHG emissions.

  • 92 percent have reviewed or are reviewing their emissions profiles.

  • 90 percent have evaluated or are evaluating their operations for opportunities to reduce, avoid, offset or sequester GHG emissions.

  • 89 percent have taken or are taking actions to reduce, avoid, offset or sequester GHG emissions through a variety of programs such as:

    • 71 percent used energy efficiency/conservation programs for manufacturing.

    • 67 percent used energy efficiency/conservation programs for buildings.

    • 33 percent constructed or modified energy production units.

    • 28 percent took part in carbon sequestration projects.

  • 76 percent have been or are participating in government-sponsored programs to reduce, avoid, offset or sequester GHG emissions.

  • 61 percent have invested or are investing in developing products or technologies which improve energy efficiency or lower carbon intensity.

  • 72 percent have reported or are reporting GHG emission management actions to the public.

Business Roundtable's Climate RESOLVE program shows that voluntary actions can reduce GHG intensity, foster innovation and promote investment in new technologies in a more cost-effective way that government mandates and rigid compliance timetables.
