Irish Farm Launches Telecom Career

Growing up as one of eight children on a farm in Ireland, Ann Brodow learned from her parents that education was key to her future. She attended the University of Galway but entered the job market during the Irish downturn of the mid-1980s. Undeterred, she won a scholarship to the University of Bridgeport, moved to the United States on a J-1 student visa and earned her Master of Business Administration degree. Ms. Brodow found that the United States offered greater career choice for women. She became a U.S. citizen in 1998.

In her current role at Verizon, Ms. Brodow makes crucial decisions that accelerate company growth. She believes that as markets and customer demands become increasingly global, immigrant employees who understand these markets are even more valuable to their employers. In true American style, Ms. Brodow has kept on the move — relocating eight times within the United States to follow new professional opportunities.

Throughout U.S. history, immigrants have come to this country, made it their new home, contributed to its success and taught their children to do their part to make it even stronger. The U.S. Congress has been considering reforms to strengthen national security and boost economic growth for years but so far has failed to act.

This report outlines the economic benefits that accompany sensible immigration reform and tells the stories of several business leaders who came to America as immigrants.
