- Note: Data represents the level of U.S. carbon emissions per dollar of real GDP. Carbon emissions are taken as a 12-month moving average to smooth out seasonal fluctuations. Real GDP is reported quarterly as a seasonally adjusted annual rate. A four-quarter moving average of GDP is taken to smooth the data, and the resulting figure is divided by 12 to produce a monthly estimate for comparison with the emissions data.
