President Obama will travel to Pittsburgh Tuesday to view a union worker-training center (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) and then accept the release of the preliminary report of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. We're expecting good things from the report, as the Council has been chaired by General Electric's Chairman and CEO, Jeff Immelt, and included other BRT-member CEOs.
According to this National Journal report from Friday, the report was initially going to be submitted Tuesday at the White House, "Council to Unveil Industry-Friendly Jobs Plan."
For now, here are media reports anticipating the event:
- Pittsburgh Business Times, "Steve Case, other Obama advisors to visit AlphaLab"
- Wall Street Journal, "White House Aims to Lure More Foreign Investment"
- WTAE.com, "President To Visit Pittsburgh, Push For Jobs" (The TV station will simulcast the President's speech.)
- Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "Obama's Pittsburgh job visit not big draw"
- John Baer, Philadelphia Daily News columnist, "Jobs bill an uncertain call"
- ABC, "Foreign CEOs: Hard to Find Skilled US Workers"
We've heard the President make the arguments for his "American Jobs Act," so the Pittsburgh trip provides a good opportunity for a broader discussion of U.S. competitiveness as key to American job creation.
