EPA Fact Sheet: Improving Our Regulations Through Periodic Retrospective Review

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is beginning a new periodic retrospective review of our existing significant regulations, to determine whether any such regulations should be modified, streamlined, expanded, or repealed, so as to make the Agency’s regulatory program more effective or less burdensome in achieving the regulatory objectives.

As called for by President Obama in Executive Order 13563, "to facilitate the periodic review of existing significant regulations," EPA will "consider how best to promote retrospective analysis of rules that may be outmoded, ineffective, insufficient, or excessively burdensome, and to modify, streamline, expand, or repeal them in accordance with what has been learned."

We want you to help us design the plan we will use to periodically review our regulations. We’re accepting your comments from now through 03/20/2011. We won’t be able to respond to every individual comment, but we value your input and will give your ideas careful consideration.

Submit your ideas online

From 02/18/2011 to 03/20/2011, you may submit comments to a number of dockets on Regulations.gov that will help us categorize and prioritize your input.

  • Share your ideas by issue or impact (e.g., innovation, environmental justice, science).
  • Share your ideas by program area (e.g., air, water, pesticides)
  • Share general ideas (Use this category if you're not sure what other category to choose or if your comment spans multiple categories. Also, you may use this category if you wish to provide other general comments on the factors we should consider in conducting our review, the process we will use in setting priorities, or the identification of candidate rules for review.) Please include an explanation as to why you believe a regulation should be modified, streamlined, expanded, or repealed; provide data or other information that supports your explanation; and provide suggestions on how we can better achieve the regulatory program's objective.
