Yesterday, Business Roundtable CEO Joshua Bolten joined “Your World with Neil Cavuto” on FOX News to discuss the business community’s support for the bipartisan debt ceiling agreement between President Biden and Speaker McCarthy.
On fiscal restraint:
- “There’s substantial constraint in this bill on spending.”
- “I think the Speaker did a good job of putting some constraints on nondefense discretionary spending while he could. … I think he took a difficult hand and produced some wins for fiscal conservatives and hopefully enough fiscal conservatives will recognize that and vote for this bill.”
On permitting reform:
- “He [Speaker McCarthy] did a good job of getting some very valuable permitting reform in place.”
On lifting the debt ceiling:
- “No amount of spending would have been worse than actually defaulting on our debt which would have absolutely destroyed our fiscal situation because it would have destroyed the full faith and credit of the United States.”
On business community support:
- “The business community is putting its weight behind encouraging members to vote for it because raising the debt ceiling is the most important thing that members can do for the economy right now.”
On a bipartisan solution:
- “This was a particularly difficult path for the Speaker and the President to arrive at an accommodation. Props to both of them, the Speaker and the President for arriving at this accommodation.”
