Business Roundtable, SHRM Foundation Release ‘A Force for Good: How Kiewit Built a More Resilient Workforce’

Study Is Second in Series of New Resources Outlining Business Strategies to Improve Employee Mental Health

Washington - Business Roundtable, SHRM, the SHRM Foundation and Stand Together today released the second in a series of case studies detailing how large U.S. employers are addressing employee mental health and well-being.

This case study focuses on Kiewit Corporation’s leadership-driven, conversation-focused approach to improve employee mental health.

“Business Roundtable CEOs and the companies they lead are committed to investing in their workforce, as proven by this excellent example from Kiewit,” said Business Roundtable Senior Vice President of Corporate Initiatives Dane Linn. “We’re grateful for Kiewit’s leading by example in offering this resource for their peers, as companies throughout America work to expand their employee mental health programs and address common challenges.”

“We take great pride as a construction and engineering leader in making sure nothing is more important than safety — not only our people’s physical safety, but their mental and emotional well-being,” said Kiewit Corporation Senior Vice President and Head of Safety Alicia Edsen. “Our commitment to employees and their families is to provide the most accessible, best mental health resources and break down stigmas that stop people from getting the help they need. That commitment also extends to our industry and beyond, which is why we partner with other organizations to openly share what we’re doing and what we’ve learned to help keep people healthy and safe.”

“Kiewit’s progressive dedication to employee well-being exemplifies the strength of listening to your workforce and taking intentional action. By adopting a comprehensive approach, prioritizing each individual and leveraging data-driven insights, they have set a new benchmark for fostering a truly supportive workplace so everyone can achieve their full potential,” said President of the SHRM Foundation Wendi Safstrom. “At the SHRM Foundation, we are proud to celebrate Kiewit’s leadership in building a workplace where employee mental health and wellbeing is a priority.”

Kiewit’s approach to supporting employee mental health includes:

  • Incorporating mental health into its company culture;
  • Creating regular opportunities for employees to discuss their mental well-being;
  • Making mental health resources widely visible and easy to access; and
  • Collaborating with external partners on mental health to achieve a greater collective impact.
